We have all heard the phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” The original phrase was, “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” The phrase has not been lost in modern science. Researchers have conducted numerous studies on the health benefits of apples and whether they can actually reduce trips to the doctor. In a study conducted by Ohio State University, it was found that an apple a day helped significantly lower levels of bad cholesterol in middle age adults.

Apples are very good for you and eating them is linked to a lower risk of many major diseases, including diabetes and cancer. What’s more, its soluble fiber content may promote weight loss and gut health. A medium apple equals 1.5 cups of fruit which is 3/4 of the 2 cup daily recommendation for fruit. Green apples may contain slightly more fiber and less carbohydrates and sugar than red apples.

Apples are a great snack for the entire family. When you are tired at work or looking for a crunchy food to munch on, they are a nutritious replacement for junk food. An apple a day might not keep the doctor away, but its nutrients will help improve your overall health.
